Credit Card Companies
MasterCard and Visa
MasterCard® and Visa® are independent, competing card associations, comprised of more than 20,000 member banks. The card associations offer products on both the cardholder-issuing and merchant-acquiring sides of the business to facilitate a complete system of electronic currency.
Cards are provided to the consumer by “Issuing Banks” with preset credit spending limits, revolving interest rates and fees. Merchants accept and deposit credit card sales through member “Acquiring Banks”. The association's role is primarily branding, marketing, governing, and enforcing the rules and regulations and setting Interchange pricing (also know as discount rates).
- An association member bank may be both a card-issuing and merchant-acquiring institution.
- The card associations have rules and regulations governing how industry risk is handled.
- Merchant Interchange fees are paid from the acquiring bank to the issuing bank.
- Issuing banks market a variety of card products including: Classic, Rewards, Gold, Platinum, commercial, business, corporate, fleet, purchasing cards, and check cards.
- Interchange fees vary depending on the type of card product and how it was accepted. For example higher rates are associated with manually-keyed transactions and business card transactions.
American Express
Also known as AMEX, American Express is a global payments company. Unlike Visa and MasterCard, American Express issues its own credit cards and is responsible for its own relationships with retailers/merchants. In addition to their direct activities, AMEX utilizes a network of registered American Express External Sales Agents (ESA) to facilitate signing merchants to accept American Express cards. As an ESA, we can offer you the opportunity to become an American Express merchant.
Accepting the American Express Card can build you business.
- American Express Cardmembers tend to spend more because they have more to spend.
- 45% of American households that earn more than $50,000 have an American Express Card.
- Cardmembers average charge on the American Express Card is 27% higher than their average charge on other cards.
- Incentive programs such as the Membership Rewards Program encourage Cardmembers to use the American Express Card - 51% of Cardmembers enrolled in the program go out of their way to use the card.
- 1.7 million companies (including almost 70% of the Fortune 500) use the American Express Corporate Card for business expenses.
- It is now easier, less expensive, and more convenient than ever to accept the American Express Card.
Did you know that American Express does not have a higher rate for manually keyed or business card transactions? So for certain types of business, Telephone and Internet commerce or small ticket merchants, pricing could be lower than MasterCard and Visa.
Merchants can also enroll in gross pay options to simplify reconciliation. American Express also offers a $5/month program with no percentage rate up to the first $5,000 in annual processing volume. Ask about both of these programs.
